A PROJECT SINCE 2005
A Thousand Cranes from Croatia for Hiroshima
Croatian children joining children in Japan and around the world in working for peace.
It began with Sadako, a girl dying of leukaemia caused by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Japanese legend holds that anyone who folds a thousand paper cranes is granted a wish; hers was to recover and live.
She managed 644 cranes. Her friends completed the thousand, and children around the world have continued the practice since.
The project was started in 2005 by the society's Origami section, marking the 60th anniversary of the bombing.
Each spring, members hold origami workshops in primary schools across Croatia. The cranes are gathered at a closing event — usually on Cvjetni trg in Zagreb — and travel to Japan, where on 6 August they are laid beneath the Sadako Sasaki monument in the Hiroshima Peace Park.
